Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extra-Corporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), is a non-invasive treatment method frequently employed for chronic conditions such as plantar fasciitis (heel pain), Achilles tendinosis, and various other persistent tendon issues.
How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?
Shockwave Therapy stimulates the body’s natural repair processes to heal and restore normal tissue. It promotes revascularization in the targeted areas, leading to the formation of new blood vessels. This enhanced blood flow aids in the removal of waste products. Essentially, Shockwave Therapy converts a chronic injury into an acute state, encouraging the regeneration of collagen in the damaged tissue, which facilitates healing. By leveraging the body’s self-healing mechanisms, Shockwave Therapy effectively rejuvenates injured tissues.
What to Expect During Treatment?
Each Shockwave Therapy session lasts approximately 20 minutes and is generally painless, so there’s no need for local anesthesia or numbing creams. During the session, the handpiece of the shockwave machine is applied to the affected area, delivering shockwaves deep into the tissue. The intensity of the shockwaves is adjusted based on the type of injury and patient feedback.
After the treatment, patients may experience tenderness, soreness, or swelling for a few days. This is a normal inflammatory response as the body begins to heal.
How Many Treatments Are Needed?
For patients undergoing Shockwave Therapy for plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis/tendinosis, typically 3 to 6 sessions are needed. However, even a single treatment can provide significant benefits by enhancing blood flow to the affected area.
At Active Foot Care, we create comprehensive treatment plans that incorporate Shockwave Therapy to help manage your pain and accelerate recovery, often in combination with other therapies for optimal results.
